The House Puppet Academy is a new study project for afults, under the guidance of referenced independent puppet makers, to be held at the House of Children and Arts during the 2019/20 season. The main idea of the project is to set up a puppet group where young people will learn about the elements of modern adult puppet theatre with the help of mentors.

The Puppet House Academy will process the individual phases of work in the puppet group, from conceptual conception to realization. Seminarists will become familiar with contemporary approaches to animation and puppetry in the performing arts. It will handle all aspects of puppetry in three modules. We will learn about different puppet techniques and their laws, make simple puppets, learn the animation abilities of individual techniques and prepare a shorter production at the end of the workshop.

The House Puppet Academy is aimed at young people between the ages of 18 and 30. Student status is not required. It is primarily intended for fans who want to learn or upgrade their knowledge of puppet theater.

It is desirable for all participants to attend the whole set of study process, ie to go through all three modules. At the end of the training there will be a production that will premiere in the Hall of the House of Children and Art.

1. FROM IDEA TO PROJECT PREPARATION (mentor: Anže Virant and Irena Rajh)

In the first part, we will focus on the selection of the literary template, the dramatization of the puppet text, the dramaturgical breakdown and the preparation of the directing concept. We will become acquainted with the basic theoretical concepts and explanations of puppet theater, with the structuralist distribution of puppetry. In practical cases, we will choose the appropriate puppetry technique and make an art design, learn the basic characteristics of puppetry. We will test ourselves in animating simple puppets in short, improvised scenes (solo and in pairs).

Dates: November 19, 26, December 3, 2019 (15 school hours)

2. FROM THE DRAWING TO THE PUPPET (mentors: Anže Virant, Irena Rajhh, Katja Povše, Marina Hrovatin)

The second module will introduce you to the basics of puppet technology and animation. We will learn about the characteristics of puppetry techniques: hand puppets, java, shadow puppets, etc. We will make different puppets and learn about the different stages of production: 3D sketch-based design, selection and specific properties of different materials, material processing, shearing, molding, grinding and gluing processes. We will explore how workmanship is conditioned by the character the puppet (role) carries, and look for the proper relationships between the individual parts of the puppet. We will get acquainted with the basics of animation of shadow, hand, finger puppets, marionette puppets, java, bunraku and the theatre of the object.

Dates: January 7-28, 2020 (20 school hours)

3. PUPPET PERFORMANCE (mentors: Anže Virant, Ana Špik, Matevž Gregorič and Irena Rajh)

The aim of the last module is a puppet show. The third module will thus be a synthesis of the first two: based on the text and the overhead concept, we will prepare a puppet staging in all its complexity. We will assign a directing and dramaturgy concept and produce a set design. We will find out what type of puppet technique is appropriate for a particular directing concept. Interpretation and animation exercises will follow. Participants will go through basic training in drama, animation and speaking techniques. We will get acquainted with the specifics of puppet directing and prepare a puppet show at the end. The completion of the last module will be a public puppet show.

The seminar will be held from 19 November 2019 – 1 April 2020, scheduled once a week, on Tuesdays between 4 pm and 8 pm. We will coordinate the exact meeting schedule with the participants at the first meeting on Tuesday 19 November.
